When I began my search for a name to brand our small town library open mic., I wanted something unusual and catchy. Stick Figure Poetry came to up because of the idea that poems were comprised of words, which were comprised of letters, which were comprised of… well, sticks, basically. Some bent or curved, but sticks nonetheless. It wasn’t a name I thought had much staying power, but then I found the poem “Stick Figures” which I had written many years prior. That’s when I realized that we were attempting to use poetry as a building block of community and that “Stick Figures,” which is about making new connections and acquaintances, and eventually turning them into friends, perfectly summed up the idea of what we were trying to accomplish with the event. So, as it turns out, the name did… STICK after all!
